Built between 1869 and 1875, the town hall of Poitiers is the end point of a vast project of urbanization of the city center, "Heart of agglo".
The Renaissance-inspired building is distinguished by a U-shaped plan and a well-paced façade flanked by side pavilions. The center is visually accentuated by the presence of the main door, surmounted by a loggia, a clock and the campanile.

Inside, the vestibule opens onto a monumental staircase, not unlike that of the Opéra Garnier, which stages the ascent of the visitor towards the loggia. From this balcony, it can in turn see and be seen ... Thus, the shape of the building has as many social meanings as its decor.
The two large canvases by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes of 1874, which are on display, are the centerpieces of an abundant carved and painted decoration. They are dedicated to two episodes of Poitevin history: the battle of Charles Martel and Saint Fortunat reading poems at Sainte Radegonde at the abbey Sainte Croix.

In the hall of honor, old ballroom, the stained glass, work of Steinheil, represents Eleanor of Aquitaine confirming the charter of municipality in 1199.
The state halls (wedding hall, ballroom and former Council Chamber) are also decorated with several large paintings, largely due to renowned Poitevin artists.

No visit possible for the public
