The Sainte-Croix museum, built in 1974, is the first museum in Poitou-Charentes for the richness of its collections of art and archeology.

Regional Prehistory is represented with an exceptional collection of engravings from the Grotto of the Marche (located in Lussac-les-Châteaux). Gallo-Roman antiquity introduces the visitor to the city of Pictons, under the protective gaze of Athena, the first-class marble statue of the first century AD. Beautiful carved sarcophagi testify to the art of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. A series of sculptures reminds us of the extraordinary radiance of the Roman workshops in Poitou.

The fine arts route is from the 14th century to contemporary art. The great artistic trends of the 19th century (neoclassicism, orientalism, ingrism, symbolism) invite the visitor to the remarkable ensemble of Camille Claudel's seven sculptures. Modern art of the early 20th century is brilliantly illustrated by paintings by Mondrian, Bonnard, Vuillard, Sisley, Marquet ...

Aggregation # 2: decline the symbol
until 5 November
Second edition of an exhibition station composed of students of the history of art and archeology of the University of Poitiers, showing works of the FRAC Poitou-Charentes with the collections of the Museum Sainte-Croix. The ambition of the exhibition is to consider the notion of symbol in its ambivalence or in its polysemy. The usages (aesthetic, political ...) of some of these symbols, their permanence and their metamorphosis over time are questioned.

Le Poitou in painting
Until July 3, 2017
Many regional artists have continued their career in Paris but have not forgotten their home country. Rich in the lessons learned from the great artistic currents of their time, they have endeavored to offer real portraits of their villages and childhood countryside, focusing on the atmospheric effects, light and composition of the rural landscape. artistic interests are also found in urban landscapes where heritage buildings, such as Notre Dame la Grande de Poitiers, are often the main subject of their canvas, a true historical witness of the passing of time and of the heritage transmitted.
